Fly Fishing at The Greyhound on the Test
If one was to stick a pin in a map to mark the ‘Mecca’ of fly fishing it would certainly fall in the town of Stockbridge, Hampshire.
Here is the birthplace of this gentle art and fly fishing history runs as deep and the chalk bed rock from which the unique chalk streams here flow.
The Greyhound on the Test is nestled on the banks of the most fabled of all rivers – the river Test and fly fishers the world over dream of casting a line on her hallowed waters. The gin clear, chalk filtered water is exceptionally fertile providing the perfect habitat in which the native brown trout to grow large. These waters are also home to grayling, Atlantic salmon and sea trout and all species can be targeted within a short drive from the Inn.
The Greyhound on the Test is particularly special as the Inn enjoys it’s own private river test beat at the bottom of the garden flowing from the beautiful water meadows beyond. Where else can you have a cast before breakfast, or order your lunch from the superb menu to be served on the riverbank in the beat’s fly fishers hut?
Through our fishing representative, Howard Taylor, founder of Upstream Dry Fly, we are able to offer exclusive access to some of the most sought after private estate fly fishing in the world. Our extensive portfolio offers fishing on over 20 named chalk streams, with over 70 beats to chose from.
Whether a beginner, improver or dry fly purist, we will make you feel welcome and build a bespoke day to fit your needs precisely. This variation gives the perfect environment for every angler’s ability and favoured piscatorial quarry.
Base yourselves at the Greyhound on the Test and we can put together a fly fishing vacation where you enjoy a different beat each day and return to the bar to share tales of big fish and tall stories over a well earned glass.
Get the absolute most out of your precious time on the water with one of our professional fly fishing guides who will collect you from the Inn after breakfast and spend the day with you on the riverbank giving you access to years of local knowledge and experience.
Enjoy an introduction to fly fishing with private tuition and exclusive use of our spring fed private estate lake just a short cast away. Perfect for a family day where you may enjoy a superb Greyhound on the Test fisherman’s hamper on the lake or riverside at lunch time.
Price guide: Fly fishing beats from £110 per rod (person) inclusive of VAT. Professional fly fishing guides £285 per day.
